6th Grade Math Syllabus

1st Nine Weeks

Using Positive Rational Numbers
Students will apply and extend previous understandings of multiplication and division to divide fractions by fractions.  Students should compute fluently with multi-digit whole numbers and decimals.  They will find common factors and multiples.

Integers and Rational Numbers
Students will apply and extend previous understandings of numbers to the system of rational numbers.  Students will use number lines and coordinate planes to represent rational numbers.

2nd Nine Weeks

Numeric and Algebraic Expression                                                                                                          Students will apply and extend previous understandings of arithmetic to algebraic expressions.  They will understand exponents, greatest common factors and least common multiples.

Represent and Solve Equations and Inequalities                                                                                      Students will reason about and solve one-variable equations and inequalities.  They will represent and analyze quantitative relationships between dependent and independent variables.

3rd Nine Weeks

Understand and Use Ratios and Rates                                                                                                      Students will understand ratio concepts and use ratio reasoning to solve problems.  They will use ratios to convert measurements units.

Understand and Use Percents                                                                                                                    Students will convert between fractions, decimals, and percents.  They will understand and use percents to solve real world problems involving percents.

4th Nine Weeks

Solve Area, Surface Area, and Volume Problems                                                                          Students will solve real-world and mathematical problems involving area, surface area, and volume.

Display, Describe, and Summarize Data                                                                                                    Students will develop an understanding of statistical variability.  They will summarize and describe distributions.
